Pros and Cons of Electronic Textbooks

As e-readers and tablet PCs become more popular, more and more college students opt to buy and use electronic textbooks. To many who have become tired and worn out in using conventional books, the idea of having and reading books in an unconventional way can be exciting.
Electronic versions of textbooks are here to stay. Each year, many publishers are joining the bandwagon and producing e-book versions of their college reference materials. Many college students are becoming more curious. Why are these books proliferating? How can the use of these books make a difference? At the same time, there are advantages and disadvantages to buying and using e-textbooks.
Pros
Students will always find the idea of carrying a library in a single device as amazing. In general, an e-reader or tablet computer can store and retrieve more than 2,000 different books at the same time. This means a college student can now possibly carry all his textbooks wherever he goes just by lugging around his 10-ounce e-reader or tablet PC.
Electronic textbooks are cheaper compared to new hard copies. This is because the costs of printing and shipping are eliminated. Many students also rave about how buying the electronic versions of books are faster and more convenient.
Who will not like the advantage of easily and quickly searching specific terms throughout an entire book? An e-book user can simply use the search feature to find the pages wherein exact keywords or phrases can be found. This works wonders for crammers.
Cons
Issues about navigation and book layout are quite common when using e-readers. Pages with pictures, graphs, and diagrams are particularly usually messed up. At times, text fonts and photographs can appear very small, the user has to always zoom in and out and constantly scroll for proper navigation.
Electronic textbooks can be cheaper but students may not fully use the books. This is why buying a used hard copy of the book or even renting can still be much more reasonable. Moreover, not all college textbooks come with electronic versions that can be accessed, saved, and retrieved through e-readers or tablet PCs.
Lastly, before any student can buy electronic textbooks, they have to invest in e-readers or tablet PCs. Such gadgets are not cheap. For beginners, using the new technology may cause stress, initially. And who can ignore the issue of some about how the use of e-readers or tablet PCs causes them eye strain?
