Free Digital Textbooks Funded Through Advertising

Bookboon.com, an organization that makes its digital textbooks available free to students, has taken the approach of funding its work by including advertising in the pages of the books. As an example, Strategic Management, a 52-page book, includes advertising for master's level programs and job recruitment adverts.

The books are available as free, downloadable PDFs.

To access them, the coed registers on the Bookboon Site. "We know the prevailing pricing of textbooks is daunting scholars from buying the compulsory reading, but we are changing that," asserted Thomas Buus Madsen, chief operations officer. "Our mission is to give the opportunity for scholars to go thru school while not having to spend a single buck on textbooks, and we are causing a difference for many students." The company targets its advertisements at specific sets of scholars. Engineering scholars, for instance, will get advertisements from engineering firms doing hiring. Larry Walther, office head in the High-school of Business at Utah State College , has released multiple books thru Bookboon to help his accounting scholars. "If they like having a tough copy, they can just print it out," he revealed, adding that most books needed for accounting courses cost around $200. "This is among the tactics technology will lower the price of tutorial materials." The publisher asserted it now offers eight hundred free textbooks.
